Day 19: My school uniform has become a canvas, each line marking another day. As the ink seeps through the fabric, I begin to understand the weight of being a conscious Arab in today's world.

It started on Day 7, when I discovered a live stream about 1,200 Palestinian political prisoners on hunger strike. While local media remained silent, I found myself drawn into their story through social media. By Day 13, their cry for justice had become my own. I immersed myself in their cause, constantly searching for updates and live streams from protests.

Day 18 marked the beginning of my personal protest. With a marker from my first-period classroom, I asked classmates to draw tally marks on my uniform. What began as a curious gesture evolved into a powerful conversation starter. Each line told a story of occupied territories, of resistance being labeled as criminality, of our collective apathy towards suffering beyond our borders.

The uniform became both a symbol and a burden. Day 20 brought questions, leading to discussions about our moral obligation to educate ourselves about global conflicts. By Day 28, though some interest had faded, I persisted. Even when called to the principal's office, I chose to maintain my protest until the hunger strike ended.

On Day 41, when the prisoners accepted a compromise deal, I changed into a clean uniform. But the experience had permanently marked me. I realized that not all causes would resonate equally with everyone, but that didn't diminish their importance.

This realization led me to found Silla, a political streetwear brand that combines fashion with social messaging, donating profits to social change NGOs. Through my role as student government president, I continue to encourage peers to engage with important issues and speak out for their beliefs.

The ink that seeped through my uniform also seeped into my consciousness, forever reminding me of my power and responsibility as an agent of change.

Day 1: The ancient Arabic prayer echoes across the desert as millions gather at Mount Arafat. "Labbayka Allāhumma Labbayk," we chant under the Arabian sun. This marks the beginning of my Hajj journey—a spiritual and linguistic pilgrimage that would transform my understanding of faith, language, and community.

By Day 3, I'm navigating the marketplaces of Makkah, where my knowledge of Arabic proves unexpectedly valuable. Simple phrases help me blend in with locals, avoiding tourist prices and, more importantly, connecting with people: a Saudi pharmacist, an Egyptian grandmother, a Moroccan family. Each interaction adds another layer to my understanding of the Islamic world.

On Day 6, in the tents of Mina, I meet a ninety-year-old Pakistani woman completing her twentieth Hajj. When I speak to her in Urdu, her face lights up. I explain how I learned Urdu to read Seerat-un-Nabi, an ancient account of Prophet Muhammad's life. Through this language, I bridge generations and traditions.

My parents' Bengali, our family's private language, takes on new meaning during this journey. What was once just a way for them to speak privately now becomes a symbol of our shared heritage and traditions.

Throughout my time in Makkah, I find myself serving as an unexpected bridge between cultures and generations. My knowledge of multiple languages transforms me from the youngest pilgrim to a valued interpreter and guide. Whether helping at the Al-Baik store or reading Quran at the Jamarat, I discover that language is more than communication—it's a tool for understanding and connection.

I leave Hajj with a renewed sense of purpose and two new goals: to learn French (donc je peux parler à plus de gens) and Spanish (quiero escuchar más historias). Each new language represents another opportunity to build bridges and hear more stories.

The number 12 defines me: my idol Tom Brady's jersey number, the sum of letters in my name, and the age I started high school. Skipping two grades—first and sixth—launched me into an academic journey that would challenge not just my intellect, but my sense of self.

Between kindergarten and eighth grade, I experienced five different schools, including two styles of homeschooling. The freedom of homeschooling transformed my relationship with learning. I devoured works from Jefferson to Twain, wrote extensive papers on ancient civilizations, and discovered an insatiable joy for knowledge.

My solution? Become Tom Brady. I obsessed over football mechanics, studied film, and even adopted Brady's strict diet. But in pursuing this change, I lost sight of my academic passion, viewing learning as a chore rather than a joy.

Everything shifted after a conversation with my friend Alex, our fastest receiver. When I expressed envy of his athletic success, his response stunned me: "Dude, I wish I was you!" This moment forced me to confront how I'd been discounting my own strengths to fit someone else's mold.

But even as a five-year-old covered in scratches, my first thoughts weren't about the pain. Instead, questions flooded my mind: Why didn't the wings work like a bird's? Why did the soft landing break my frame? Why hadn't the parachutes deployed? Most importantly, why didn't I fly?

This innate drive to understand 'why' evolved into a deep love for engineering. I challenged myself with the hardest STEM classes available, completing all science and math courses by junior year. This accelerated path placed me among older students, giving me early access to advanced research opportunities.

As a team leader in my school's engineering pathway, I learned to harness collective creativity. Whether building hovercrafts or developing new technologies, I constantly questioned and refined our designs, pushing for optimal solutions.

My passion for real-world problem-solving led to developing a more efficient water purification system inspired by India's water crisis, and creating a novel approach to detecting Alzheimer's disease using piezoresistive microcantilevers. These projects showed me engineering's power to transform abstract ideas into practical solutions.

Thirteen years after that first attempted flight, I still haven't cracked the code for human flight. My younger self might see this as failure, but I now recognize that crash landing as the launchpad for my engineering journey. While I may never achieve human flight, I've discovered something far more valuable: the endless possibilities of engineering to solve real-world challenges.

February 2011: The sound of gunshots and screaming pierced through our casual soccer game in my grandfather's yard. The Arab Spring had arrived in Bahrain, transforming my homeland from a peaceful paradise of palm trees and pearls into an unfamiliar landscape of conflict.

I learned to recognize tear gas by its acrid smell before it stung my eyes. Newspaper headlines showcased bloody clashes and Molotov cocktails. Tanks became regular fixtures on our streets, while protesters chanted "Yaskut Hamad!" The only home I'd known became a place that taught me fear.

By September 2013, I decided that understanding was the antidote to fear. I began analyzing the Arab Spring's causes, particularly in Bahrain where religious and political tensions between Shias and Sunnis had reached a breaking point. I wanted equality and justice, not the devastating chaos that had consumed Libya and Syria.

This quest for understanding led me to action. I became involved in student government, eventually serving as President. Through Model United Nations, I learned to view global conflicts from multiple perspectives, debating issues from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to Syrian refugee crisis. With the Heritage Club, I organized support for refugees and migrant workers, providing essential supplies to those in need.

In 2016, my selection for the Crown Prince International Scholarship Program (CPISP) marked a turning point. The program, choosing participants based on merit rather than sectarian identity, showed me how leadership could transcend religious and political divisions.

Through CPISP's training, seemingly simple tasks like building balloon chairs revealed profound lessons about cooperation and trust-building. I realized that my country needed more than political solutions—it needed trust built through shared experiences and achieved goals.

Today, I no longer live in fear. Instead, I've found purpose in studying political science and economics, seeking answers to my country's unresolved challenges. I envision a Bahrain known not just for its pearls and palm trees, but for the understanding and unity of its people.

I've been pooped on countless times—by pigeons, possums, house finches, hawks, egrets, and eastern grays. And honestly, I don't mind it. The same goes for being pecked, hissed at, scratched, and bitten. Even skinning dead mice to feed baby owls (though I'll admit, that one does make me squirm a bit).

These experiences don't bother me because I understand that while these animals might hate me during treatment, their survival depends on my attention to their needs. Their chance to return to the wild—to their homes—relies on my careful observation of their behaviors and conditions.

My passion for animals and concern about habitat loss led me to intern at the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley. There, I met those memorable opossum joeys who regularly decorated my shoes with their droppings, encountered an affectionate baby squirrel who mistook my finger for its mother, and faced off with numerous angry pigeons determined to remove my fingers.

When the internship ended, I felt an unexpected reluctance to leave. This wasn't just about my love for animals—it stemmed from a deeper sense of responsibility. Most of these animals were there because of human actions: mother opossums killed by cars, raptors poisoned by rodenticides, coyotes caught in illegal traps. We caused their suffering; I believed we had an obligation to help fix it.

This sense of responsibility extends beyond the wildlife center. I couldn't ignore the Arctic's destruction by oil companies, or the devastating effects of destructive fishing practices on ocean life. While these problems might seem too distant or too vast for some, I've learned to take action through letter-writing campaigns, protests, and local education initiatives in parks about ocean conservation.

Sometimes I wonder if my environmental activism is just a way to ease my conscience. But then I remember my mother's golden rule: treat others as you want to be treated. Yes, I once took this to an extreme by moving roadkill to the roadside because "if I was hit by a car, I'd want someone to move me off the road too."

The truth is, I simply cannot walk away from injustice, no matter how uncomfortable confronting it might be. I choose to act, to expose truth, and to push for change in whatever way I can. And while I know I'll continue to get dumped on—both literally and metaphorically—I refuse to do the same to others or to our environment.
